Baltimore Ravens general manger Ozzie Newsome said yesterday that the team will franchise linebacker Terrell Suggs if it cannot reach a long term deal with the coveted star. The one year deal will net T-Sizzle a salary of $8.065 million, the average of the top five highest paid linebackers in the league.
Suggs should be at Ray Lewis’ door right now, offering him and his mama free sweet potato pies for life. If it wasn’t for Ray’s impact on the linebacker position, this salary wouldn’t even be an imaginable deal for Suggs. It’s a good move for the Ravens to franchise him, as there are no indications that Suggs wants to leave Baltimore any time soon, and it buys them time to make good moves in free agency and the draft.
Besides, the Ravens played this role with cornerback Chris McAlister for a couple of years until they could net him a deal. Now it’s Sizzle’s turn to wear the big red tag.
