Ravens Need to Get Big With First Round Pick

We recently ran an excellent post on what the Baltimore Ravens should do with the eighth pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. Obviously, QB names are being thrown around like a classic West Coast Offense drive down the field, along with cornerbacks and receivers.

But one position that hasn’t drawn considerable attention is that of defensive end. And one name that should be mentioned as a potential high pick is the University of Miami’s Calais Campbell.

Unlike most years, the Ravens will be drafting to fill immediate needs, rather than creating depth and future stock at critical positions. Defensive end is one of those positions that deserves a look when preparing for the future. Check the logic:

  • The linebacking corp is not the feared unit it once was. Terrell Suggs is a natural speed rush off the edge when he lines up at end, but his agility is needed more against pass defense on running backs and tight ends. A big body on the line frees him, and allows Ray Lewis’ last years to be possibly his best.
  • Campbell could be to the defensive line what Jonathan Ogden was to the offensive line. A huge body demanding extra attention that changes game planning against a formidable defense.
  • Kelly Gregg, one of the most underrated linemen in the game, will have more room to work with offenses keying on Campbell.
  • The Ravens are in need of a corner, but addressing pressure needs makes it much easier on the young corner they will target in the middle rounds.

Besides, the Cincinnati Bengals and Minnesota Vikings have openly declared their overtures for the 6’7″, 285 lbs Campbell, and the last thing the franchise can afford in a transition period is a glaring “what could have been.”
