What the CBA Collapse Means for the Baltimore Ravens

In case you haven’t heard, the NFL owners unanimously agreed that the players get too much money, and opted out of their collective bargaining agreement. The short of it is that in 2011, the NFL will possibly face a season with no salary cap, if there’s a season at all.

So it begs the question, what does this mean for the Baltimore Ravens?

Primarily, it casts a light on the contract situations of eight players currently on the roster and their futures with the franchise; Jonathan Ogden, Ray Lewis, Samari Rolle, Derrick Mason, Trevor Pryce, Terrell Suggs and Bart Scott. There’s a strong possibility that Ogden, Rolle and Pryce will not be with the team beyond this season, but for the remaining players, the buzz word will be extension.

Ultimately, it all rests with the negotiations that the league and the players association hammer out for revenue sharing, but even a solution to a new salary cap agreement will not diminish the need for long term deals for Bart Scott and Terrell Suggs, and lucrative short term packages for the aging veterans. Don’t be surprised if the players go for all they can, knowing that revenue sharing potentially might be cut.
