While John Harbaugh would lead us to believe that the race is wide open, his naming of Troy Smith as the starter for this week’s preseason game against the St. Louis Rams has all but locked in the Ohio State Buckeye as the captain of the Ravens’ early season hopes.
Harbaugh may be new in town, but he’s not new to the NFL. And enthusiasts know that Kyle Boller may have the tenure and the experience, but he doesn’t have the consistency to be the Ravens’ quarterback until rookie Joe Flacco is prepped and ready to go. It’s better to engage teams and fans with the unexpected in Smith, than to prompt opposition to go blitz crazy and for Ravens’ fans to blitz the exits by naming Boller the starter, again.
Flacco is clearly not ready, and while neither quarterback has distinguished himself as the clear favorite, Smith is in his second-year and has less working against him. Boller will be gone after this season, so its better to start clean with Smith than to hope for what will never be with Boller.
