Today on Twitter, a fellow Ravens fan asked whether I think Ray Rice or Willis McGahee will get more carries this season. This will be a short post on this topic, more on it later.
I responded to him saying that “McGahee will get more carries, but Rice will get more opportunities to shine” or something along those lines. By this, I mean that McGahee will get slightly more touches, but the offense will feature Rice in packages and plays that give him a better chance to explode for a big play. Let’s run through a typical drive in this situation.
- 1st & 10: McGahee gets a carry, goes 4 yards
- 2nd & 6: McGahee gets it again, this time on a toss, loses 3
- 3rd & 9: Rice is on the field, catches a swing pass, and goes for a TD.
The team would design plays specifically for Rice, as opposed to McGahee, who they would just load the normal workload on. The only reason I think this is because of Rice’s performance last year where he showed explosiveness and this year’s performance in training camp.
