Mardy Gilyard and Dexter McCluster

When Ozzie Newsome drafted Mark Clayton with the 22nd pick of the 2005 NFL Draft, he was supposed to be our home run hitter. After five seasons, it’s safe to say that he didn’t really pan out.

With the 25th pick of the 2010 draft, many expect Newsome to go after a receiver again; but honestly, there aren’t too many that would be worth the pick. Dez Bryant will almost certainly be off the board, and Golden Tate and Arrelious Benn scare me a bit as round one prospects. We all know that Newsome prides him self on taking the best player available, and those two guys just wouldn’t fall into that category.

Two guys that would fall into the “BPA” category in round two at least, would be Cincinnati wide receiver Mardy Gilyard and Ole Miss wide receiver and running back Dexter McCluster. Both of these guys are coming off of impressive senior bowls, and could very well be available when the Ravens pick in round 2.

We all know that a true number one receiver could be the biggest need this off season, but just because these guys are under sized doesn’t mean they can’t make plays. Just look at guys like Desean Jackson and Darren Sproles, they seem to be doing just fine for themselves.

Gilyard is about 5’11″ and weighs in at 179, but the kid is a proven playmaker. McCluster played both running back and receiver in college, but could easily end up playing the slot at the NFL level. He measures at 5’8″ 165 pounds, but may be even more explosive than Gilyard. Did I mention that both of these guys can return kicks?

Neither prospect is much of a sure thing, but they both have that Percy Harvin, Reggie Bush factor that can elevate an offense.
