Ravens Sign S Bernard Pollard To A Two Year Deal

Baltimore will add another safety to the mix in the form of Bernard Pollard. Pollard is known for being a hard hitter and should fit right in with the Ravens’ play style.

Bernard Pollard will likely compete with Tom Zbikowski and Haruki Nakamura for the starting strong safety position since Ed Reed has locked up free safety. Even if he does not start, it’s good to have some extra insurance, especially at safety. Ed Reed has had trouble staying healthy all year, and an experienced backup that can step in at any time is vital to the teams success.

this is a good signing, he has lead his team in tackles 2 out of the last three years(impressive for a safety) and will immediatley be the hardest hitter on the Ravens back four(i would say on the whole defense if not for Ray Ray) this guy knows how to lay the wood. he isnt as great in coverage but i think alot of that has been by scheme, in houston they asked him to do to much in space and in KC they rarely asked him to play coverage at all(he played like a small LB) this is a very solid signing and if it was really for as low as ive heard(6.5 million total) then he is a tremendous value and should be able to pick up right where landry left off.(i see Zibby as a FS, i dont think he has those big hits and bruising mentality that it takes to play SS and i cant imagine Ruki as a legit starter) this also helps shore up the safety corp in the event that Ed Reed goes down, i feel much better with FS-Zibby and SS- Pollard than i do with FS-Ruki and SS-Zibby or vice versa.

@tymonster183 I agree with you completely. Zibby is much better at Free Safety but he needs a bit more polish which should come in time. Haruki is a better special teams player and I haven’t seen him make any big plays on defense though he is still young. Pollard’s coverage skills are a concern but if our corners hold up and perform well and we get a solid pass rush, he’ll fit in great. He’s a very good blitzing safety and will provide run support. It will all be trial and error with the defense but hopefully they’ll figure it out sooner rather than later.
