A Giant and Super Comeback for the Ages

The New York Giants began December as a sports betting long shot to make the Super Bowl as they were riding a 4 game losing streak that put their record at 6-6. But much like the Green Bay Packers of last year the Giants recovered and took the hard road to the Super Bowl that will be played this Sunday at Indianapolis against the New England Patriots in a rematch of the February 2008 Super Bowl in which the Giants upset the then undefeated Patriots to destroy their dream of 19-0 perfection and glory.

The Giants that were 6-6 are almost unrecognizable to the team that has taking sports betting by storm in the NFL Playoffs. The Giants allowed 25 points per game on defense during the regular season which is an abysmal number but they have allowed only 13 points per game during the playoffs. Just as important were the two quality road wins in the post season after New York blew out Atlanta in the wild card round in a 24-2 home win.

The Giants proved their championship mettle with a 37-20 win at defending champion Green Bay as Giants quarterback Eli Manning clearly outplayed his Packer counterpart Aaron Rodgers. That was followed by a dramatic 20-17 overtime win at San Francisco in the NFC Championship Game in which Manning demonstrated admirable courage as he took a brutal beating by the 49ers defense that was locked in on clobbering the Giants’ QB any and every chance they got.

This Super Bowl is full of ironies starting with the fact that the Giants upset the Packers at Green Bay in the 2007 playoffs to reach that Super Bowl against the Patriots in which they won as double digit dogs. Place kicker Lawrence Tynes also had déjà vu all over again as he kicked the game winning over time field goal for the Giants in the 2007 and 2011 NFC Championship Games to put Big Blue in the Super Bowl.

This outstanding playoff run has to be especially satisfying for Giants coach Tom Coughlin who was under intense fire in December during the 4 game losing streak. Coughlin has been vindicated as a coach that is superb with attention to detail and preparation. The Giants finally began executing his game plans and that proved to be the difference that put them on a plane to Indianapolis for Super Sunday.
