Today could mark the end of an era in Baltimore. The Ravens aren’t a lock to get a home playoff game, they could still lose the division and end up the 6 seed in the AFC. If that is the case, there is a very good chance that this is the last day Ed Reed will ever wear purple in M&T Bank Stadium.

Reed is a free agent after the season, there is a very very good chance that the Ravens let him test free agency like they did with Ray Lewis in 2009. The one option is the Franchise tag. Right now it has Flacco written all over it but if the Ravens can get a deal in place with Flacco then Reed would likely be tagged, but that might be a long shot. If Reed hits the open market, he might find that he isn’t worth what he thinks he is. That would be my suspision. Reed believes he should be the highest paid safety in the league. Honestly, with his wishy washy stance on his career path and his declining health, he simply isn’t worth that kind of money anymore, certainly not outside of Baltimore where the system isn’t built around him. But Reed is stubborn, if he decides to leave the Ravens, he might leave on principle despite what the money says.

Hopefully we will be able to watch another year of Reed or maybe more. but the odds are against it. Hopefully the Ravens can work it out, it would be very sad to see Reed play elsewhere, especially considering the Ravens 2 other best all time players(Lewis and Ogden) both spent their entire careers in Baltimore and Terrell Suggs, Haloti Ngata and Ray Rice on on course to do the same.
