Mandatory Minicamp – Notes From Day 1

Today was the first day of Raven’s mandatory minicamp, and thankfully there is little drama to report.  It appears that veterans Terrell Suggs, Haloti Ngata, and Chris Canty were in attendance.  This is a great sign since none of the three were present for voluntary work.  Suggs and Ngata don’t have to worry about their roster spots, but Canty might.

Noticeably not present were Terrence Cody (hip), Kamar Aiken (leg), and Jah Reid (calf).  Cody isn’t expected back until training camp.  Reid may be on the outs after an offseason arrest and underwhelming onfield play.

Two more players that didn’t make it to minicamp are wide receiver Aaron Mellette and linebacker Adrian Hamilton, who were both cut today.  Mellette was a seventh round pick who spent last season on injured reserve after undergoing knee surgery.  He showed well in the preseason before going down, so the Ravens must not have liked how his recovery was coming along.  Hamilton was undrafted and also spent last year on IR with a wrist injury.

In addition to Aaron Ross, Drayton Florence, Dominique Franks, and Marquice Cole, the Ravens also tried out former Colts third round pick Kevin Thomas.  Thomas missed his entire rookie season with a knee injury, and was then traded to the Eagles but didn’t stick and had recently signed a contract to play in the CFL.  At least you can say they are casting a wide net for help at the third cornerback position.
