Everyone has speculated about the struggles of Torrey Smith this season.  Smith’s slow start has been the topic of many stories, and many are surprised by his lack of involvement in the offense.  It all culminated with a game ending dropped pass Sunday against the Colts on 4th down.

We have documented Smith’s troubles with both usage in Gary Kubiak’s scheme and his willingness to give up on routes, but it appears that there are other issues affecting his play as well.  Smith posted via Twitter late Sunday that he was disappointed in his performance, but also affected by the two year anniversary of the loss of his little brother.

Smith’s younger brother, Tevin, passed away in a motorcycle accident in late September of 2012. He was only 19 years old. It was a horrible and trying experience for Torrey and his family to go through, and it is obviously still affecting him two years later.

Tevin’s birthday is October 6th, which means that Torrey was dealing with both his birthday and the anniversary of the accident this weekend. Our sympathies go out to Torrey and his family, and we hope that he can move forward after what has certainly been a difficult week.
