The Baltimore Ravens are, without a doubt, in the market for a cornerback. Apparently they were also in the market for the best cornerback in the NFL, as crazy as that may sound. Former Patriot and current (again) Jet Darrelle Revis told SNY’s Adam Schein and Chris Carlin that the Ravens were among a number of teams that reached out to him during his short time as a 2015 free agent.
While the though of a defensive backfield featuring Jimmy Smith and Revis lining up across from each other is sure to give Ravens’ fans fits, it was obviously a shot in the dark. The Ravens simply don’t have the cap space to pay a guy like Revis, who reeled in a five year, $70 million dollar contract from the Jets. But you can’t blame any team for at least inquiring about one of the NFL’s best players, of course.
What’s interesting to note is that quite a few teams reached out to Revis, including the Packers, Steelers, Chiefs, and Browns, in addition to the Ravens. It was previously thought that the quest for his services was only a two way race between the Jets and Patriots. But I’m guessing that none of those teams could come close to matching the kind of top offers he received, with the exception of Cleveland.
It’s also worth noting that Revis’ $16 million dollar cap hit in 2015 is equal to what Haloti Ngata was going to cost, had he stayed in Baltimore. Of course the Ravens are still left with $8.5 million in dead money from Ngata’s contract this year, but it makes you wonder what could have been. Signing Darrelle Revis for big bucks would have been a very uncharacteristic move for the Ravens, but oh how sweet it could have been.
