The Baltimore Ravens are doing their due diligence on all the top cornerbacks available in the draft, which is music to the ears of fans.  We’ve already highlighted Wake Forest’s Kevin Johnson as a guy who should peak their interest, and now word has come down that the talented corner will indeed be working out for the Ravens ahead of the draft.

A projected first round pick who is widely considered to be the second best corner in this year’s draft, Johnson allowed a mere 24 receptions in coverage in 2014.  He was named second team All-ACC last season, racking up 44 tackles with 3.5 going for a loss.  In 2013, he finished second in the ACC with 15 passes defensed and had three interceptions.

Kevin Johnson has smooth hips and demonstrates excellent balance, looking very natural in man coverage.  He is disruptive in press coverage as well, showing the ability to alter routes on the fly. Johnson has shown good footwork over his career and the ability to transition laterally.  He has the recovery speed to compensate for mistakes and the tenacity to drop his shoulder and make the big hit.

The biggest knocks on Kevin Johnson revolve around his lanky frame and thin lower body, which could cause some issues in run support at the NFL level.  His natural cover skills, athleticism, and competitiveness give him an advantage, however.  Johnson could be a day one starter with a little work in the weight room.

For the Ravens, picking up Johnson would be a coup of sorts.  He is a guy they can afford to use in the slot through his rookie year if Jimmy Smith and Lardarius Webb stay healthy.  Johnson has the natural talent to beat out Asa Jackson in training camp and help solidify one of the team’s weak spots in 2014.
