Baltimore Ravens State of the Corps: Cornerbacks

Cornerback is an intriguing position for the Baltimore Ravens going into the draft and the 2015 season. Last year the entire corps was devastated by injuries and it really showed. The secondary gave up lots of yards on big plays over the top and even on shorter throws, thanks to many missed tackles and blown coverages.

With players like Antonio Brown and A.J. Green in the AFC North along with up-and-comers such as Mohamed Sanu and Martavis Bryant, cornerback must be a position of focus for Ravens if they want to keep pace in a competitive division.

Coming out of last season, if I heard anyone say anything other than defensive back was the Ravens’ biggest need I scoffed at them.  But if Lardarius Webb and Jimmy Smith are both completely healthy for the beginning of the season and can stay that way while regaining their previous form, then I don’t think the Ravens need an instant starter.

Smith is a rising star who can stick to a primary receiver. Webb, who is now 2 years removed from a torn ACL, can hopefully finally return to his pre-injury form as one of the better corner backs in the league. Now, that doesn’t mean I think the Ravens should forget about cornerback completely.

The Ravens still need a number three/slot corner and a developmental guy for the future. As far as free agency goes, there are no longer any players out there that I think are worth bringing in. However, depending on who’s available, I think corner is a position still worth looking at in the 1st or 2nd round of the draft.
