If it seems like the Baltimore Ravens have scoped out nearly every prominent running back prospect in the upcoming NFL Draft, it’s because they have.  The latest apple of their eye is Minnesota’s David Cobb, a projected third round pick who ran a 4.58 40 at the Golden Gophers’ pro day.  Cobb’s workout is notable because he injured his quad during the NFL Combine and couldn’t finish his workout at that time.

The Ravens were joined by 20+ teams at the pro day workout, and have previously met with Cobb at both the Combine and Senior Bowl.  He was a bell cow back at Minnesota, rushing for 1,626 yards last season (a school record) and 13 touchdowns.  He also has prototypical running back size at 5’11” and 229 pounds.

David Cobb isn’t flashy by any means, but he is a powerful and compact runner who doesn’t go down easily.  He gained 54% of his yards over the last two seasons after contact and he finishes his runs with authority.  What Cobb is not is an improviser or a dynamic start/stop runner.  He’s not going to bounce to the outside and he needs a little work in pass protection, but Cobb has the tools to grow into a feature back.

If the Ravens don’t grab a back in the first two rounds, David Cobb would be a great get in the third.  He would be a perfect compliment to Justin Forsett for a season or two with the upside to dominate carries once he polishes his game a little.  And what better guy to learn under than Forsett, who has proven to be an excellent mentor over his career?
