Should The Ravens Sign Kyle Arrington?

On Monday, the New England Patriots cut cornerback Kyle Arrington in what appears to be the final purge of a Super Bowl winning secondary. Coincidentally, the Ravens are sure to be in the market for a veteran corner who can add depth and experience to a group still lacking just that, and many believe Arrington is perfect for the job.

The Ravens filled a lot of gaps on the roster through the draft, though cornerback is still viewed by most as the biggest concern.  Mostly due to the lack of depth behind the injury prone Jimmy Smith and Lardarius Webb.

Fourth round pick Tray Walker is a nice project who will eventually provide depth, but he is unlikely to have a huge impact early on.

On top of that, the Ravens are sure to be looking for a good slot corner, which is something the team has been sorely missing since the departure of Corey Graham.

Kyle Arrington ticks all of these boxes and could potentially provide a strong slot option as well as being a more than serviceable backup with big game experience.

Age isn’t a problem, and at 28 we should be able to expect at least a few more good years out of Arrington, unless Bill Belichick knows something we don’t (which is entirely possible).

The money side of things would also appear to fall into place. Arrington was set to earn $3 million in 2015, which is close to the $3.14 million in cap space the Ravens are projected to have according to Spotrac.

However, in an offseason that feels like it has been more about money than ever and one in which cornerbacks have been in high demand, a big spender could easily swoop in and price Baltimore out of the equation.

It is also quite possible that the Patriots resign him and that this was simply a move to clear up some cap space, but we will have to wait and see.

It is also worth noting  that the cap space remaining, whilst not terrible, is still slim, and the Ravens may be looking to save some space to rollover to 2016 and the impending increase on Joe Flacco’s contract.

To me (and I expect many others), Kyle Arrington would be a great fit and could fill possibly the biggest gap remaining on the roster. With a shored up secondary and a revamped offense, what’s to stop another playoff run?

The only thing I don’t like about Arrington is the jersey he has been wearing for the last 6 years, but that’s an easy enough fix.
