Kamar Aiken Is No Longer An Unknown Commodity

Yesterday was Kamar Aiken’s birthday, so I thought his career made an interesting topic. Last season Aiken showed that he was a solid player that the Ravens could depend on. When seemingly everything was going wrong, Aiken was a bright spot for the team.

What Aiken proved last season is that he can be counted on to make plays. He is not a number one receiver. He is far from superstar status. Though his 75 reception performance showed that he is a solid number two target.

With a healthy Steve Smith Sr. and Aiken on opposite sides, and Mike Wallace in the slot, the Ravens look to have a more balanced passing attack. Aiken has developed into a quarterback friendly receiver. He runs sharp routes and he comes back to the football well.

Smith Sr. was leaned on too heavily last season. It was almost like Joe Flacco did not trust any of his other targets. When Smith Sr. went down against the San Diego Chargers, Aiken showed that he could be depended on.

In the second half of the 2015 season Aiken stepped up to the challenge. He had 5 catches or more in each of the Ravens last nine games. His best game of the season was against the Kansas City Chiefs. It may have been a bad day for the Ravens overall, but Aiken had eight receptions for 128 yards and a touchdown.

With more talent around him, Aiken can go back to being a role player. The offense won’t lean on him. They know he will make plays when he is called upon, and that he can be a solid player in the starting lineup.

What is exciting about Aiken, is the future. He grew exponentially last season. If he keeps making strides in his game, the best will be yet to come.
