Wide receiver Michael Campanaro has signed a new deal with the Baltimore Ravens

Baltimore Raven’s beat reporter Jeff Zrebiec broke the news today that the Baltimore Ravens have signed Michael Campanaro to a deal. The deal is for 1-year with a max of $2 million. According to Zrebiec, the Ravens have opened up $600K in cap space with the move.

The Ravens placed an original round tender on Campanaro last month. It meant that they would receive a compensatory pick (7th rounder) if Campanaro was signed by another team. But now that he has signed a new deal, he is no longer a restricted free agent. The cap space could be crucial in bringing in a veteran free agent such as an Anquan Boldin or Nick Mangold.

If Healthy, He Can Contribute

The Ravens took Campanaro in the 7th round of the 2014 NFL Draft. For a 7th round pick, he has been very useful when healthy. The problem is injuries have taken away playing time in his young career. He was placed on injured reserve in 2015, but was brought back to the active roster towards the end of last season. A main reason was to help the struggling return game. He finished the season injury free, which is a good sign for both parties.

Campanaro provided a much better return game than Devin Hester. He also became a threat on the offensive side. The Ravens used Campanaro on a jet sweeps that caught the opposing defense off guard. He is the kind utility player that can be used in different ways. With lack of depth at receiver, he could also be a major piece going forward. I could especially see him being used in the slot along with Danny Woodhead. The key for him is staying healthy this upcoming season.
