With the 2013 NFL draft just days away, we are starting to get a better feel for how the draft will fall. There is growing buzz that the Bills will be choosing between Syracuse QB Ryan Nassib and USC QB Matt Barkley. While I think neither of those two would be good options at 8 overall(seriously, 8th?)

If that is true, then there is a good chance that 3 QBs(Barkley, Nassib and Geno Smith) will be taken in the first round ahead of the Ravens. Anytime a QB is taken, it is a good thing for the Ravens. When a team reaches for a QB, it pushes a better player down the board. Every time a team takes one of this group of second round QBs, a first round value falls one spot further. it benefits every team below the team that reaches for the pick.

The current favorites for the drafts top QBs are the Jags(at 2) for Geno Smith, The Jets(9 and 13) for Geno smith and Matt Barkley, the Bills(8) for Nassib and Barkley. Ideally all three of those guys would go early and a surprise team like the chiefs or cardinals would trade up into the mid 20s for EJ Manuel. If that were the case, the Ravens would get, at worst, the 28th best player in the draft(under the premise that there isn’t a QB graded in the top 32, there isn’t one on my board). That is a heck of a lot better than getting the 32nd best player.

Let Your Voice Be Heard! Welcome to todays draft poll.

Today is another safety matchup, one of my favorite players in the draft and an extremely safe pick in DJ Swearinger and one of the bigger boom or bust prospects in Eric Reid. Both are likely mid to late second round players that could easily be available at 62 for the Ravens.

Eric Reid, FS, LSU

Reid is perhaps the most physically impressive player in this draft class. Certainly the most physically impressive safety. Reid has all the talent in the world. He is extremely fast and strong, he hits very hard, he has decent instincts. The question with Reid is what type of player are you getting? Do you get the 2011 version of Reid where he looked like an early first round caliber player and a future all pro? or do you get the 2012 Reid who looked out of place and lost for most of the season last year? If you get the former, he could be the biggest steal in the draft, if you get the latter he will be a career special teamer and journeyman. Boom or Bust. As an example of how much disagreement there is in draft circles about Reid, Daniel Jeremiah of NFL network says he wouldn’t take Reid until at least the mid second while Charles Davis, of the same network, would take him as high at 13 to the Buccaneers(as the top safety in the class). Jeremiah formerly worked for the Ravens.

DJ Swearinger, S, South Carolina

Swearinger is the exact opposite of Reid. He isnt overly physically impressive(that isnt to say that he doesn’t have an NFL body, he does), but he has incredible instincts and feel for the game. He is a much more polished player than Reid and has very little bad tape. Swearinger, if he falls to the mid-late second round, might well be the safest pick in the draft. At worst he is a passable starter in the league. He has experience playing strong safety, free safety and slot and outside corner. He is an extremely versatile player. He also might be the hardest hitter in the draft. Swearinger hits players with a vengeance. When you come across his zone, he hits you and you feel it. Swearinger is very reminiscent of Bernard Pollard, but Swearinger has more potential as a cover safety as well.

I know who I would take, Who would you take Ravens nation?
