Here is a bit of news that everyone else seems to have either not noticed, or isn’t interested in. I find it fascinating. Joe Flacco is adding on some poundage.

Flacco has added about 7 lbs. of muscle to his frame. He now weighs in at a healthy 252 lbs(standing 6’6″) that is up almost 20 lbs from the stringy kid that came out of Delaware in 2008.

I have heard several analysts brush this aside like it is nothing, but I disagree.

I have one one question for anyone writing this off….Did you watch the playoffs? Did you watch the Superbowl? Because anyone who saw Flacco utilizing the best footwork of his career and looking like a cross between Big Ben and Tom Brady stepping up in the pocket and brushing off would be tacklers for more time to throw can’t seriously say that adding a few pounds to his frame is meaningless. This is big(literally, Flacco is one of the biggest QBs in the league, he has Big Ben by an inch and 11 lbs.)

One of the unspoken stories of the playoffs was that Flacco finally found his feet. He figured out pocket presence and how to buy time with small movements and utilize his big body to shrug off defenders like he never has before. Once that clicked, it was a no brainer for him to add bulk, especially with a new center and the incredibly inconsistant Bryant McKinnie on his blind side. throw in an inexperienced WR corp and you have a recipe for Flacco to get torn apart if he cant buy extra time in the pocket.

I love the move. Good job Joe, keep up the good choices.

The Ravens line backer corp took another hit today with the news that second round rookie Arthur Brown has undergone hernia surgery and is expected to be out for 4-6 weeks.

The surgery means Brown will miss all of OTAs and Minicamp, but he should be ready for the start of training camp and will certainly be ready for the regular season barring any unforeseen setbacks.

This does suck, and Brown will miss out on some key learning time, but it isnt the end of the world. This isnt a major surgery that has big risk or anything like that, it was likely done laproscopically and basically just needs time for the scar-tissue to grow into place. If I were a betting man, I would still put my money on Brown being a day one starter in Baltimore, Hernia or no.

It should give more offseason reps to the likes of Bryan Hall and Josh Bynes who are fighting for a roster spot. Hall is the most interesting Raven of the offseason in my eyes because he is attempting a move from defensive tackle to ILB. He is incredibly talented but a complete wildcard right now. He could emerge as the starter or be cut next week, The extra reps will do him good and give him a better chance for success.

Here is the biggest news to come out of the NFL in weeks, sadly it isnt really big news but whatever. The NFL is on the verge of a deal with the NFLPA to completely re-structure the NFL offseason.

First, they would move the start of free agency forwar to the end of February. There had been some discussion of moving it back, but word on the street is that the NFLPA wouldnt have any part of the NFL attempting to delay free agency so they decided to move it forward and move everything else around it.

The next proposed change is moving the combine from late February to mid to late march, that keeps the NFL schedule basically the same, just swaps the combine and free agency. After that, the NFL draft would be moved to mid may. That means that this dead time were in right now, wouldnt be so dead anymore. We would still be talking about draft fallout and undrafted free agency.

That way OTAs would start up shortly after the draft, the NFL calendar would be be a legit 12 month timeline and a full year round sport. Im typically a traditional sort of guy, Im not a huge fan of change, especially in the schedule of my sports year, but I like this plan. Plain and simple, May and June suck as far as the NFL is concerned. There is less than nothing happening, the only news is completely fabricated or complete conjecture. This plan makes May exciting and June should have enough carryover to last at least most of the month. This is pretty sweet stuff.
