We agree that it is slightly improbable to think that Smith will match his WR1 numbers from his Panthers days. He isn’t the number one wide receiver on this team, and may actually wind up third in targets. But we don’t doubt that he will get his, because he can still get open and make tough catches in the middle of the field. Smith has also proven to be very durable over the years so there isn’t a ton of risk here.
For a WR4 with WR2/3 upside, you could do a whole lot worse. Would you rather have Marquise Lee, Brian Hartline, Hakeem Nicks, Danny Amendola, Josh Gordon (for what, a couple games if you’re lucky?), or Golden Tate? We sure wouldn’t, but all are coming off the board before Smith. Every one of those guys is either an injury red flag, unproven, or unmotivated. No thanks, Smith is none of the above.
