WR Steve Smith Sr. – Torn Achilles – Level of concern: High

I probably shouldn’t doubt Steve Smith, but I just hope that he doesn’t have to play a large role on offense this year. He’s one of the best wide receivers of all time and I have nothing but respect for the man, but coming off a serious injury at 37 years old has me worried. As with Terrell Suggs, Smith suffered a torn Achilles. Smith’s injury occurred much later however, during Week 8 against the San Diego Chargers.

With less time to recover and playing a position that demands explosiveness and cutting on a dime, Smith Sr. may take longer to fully come back than most people think. Thankfully the Ravens invested in wide receiver this season, signing Mike Wallace and drafting Chris Moore and Keenan Reynolds. Steve Smith can play as an inside or outside receiver and will add an element of veteran toughness and leadership when he comes back.

Smith Sr. needs 39 catches to reach 1000 for his career and has the chance to win a Super Bowl trophy on a team that fits his personality like a glove, should we even doubt that he’ll give it his all and come back strong? Only time will tell.
