4. Going Back To Kyle Boller In 2003 Playoffs

The 2003 Baltimore Ravens had their season ended, in the Wild Card round by the visiting Tennessee Titans. Head coach, Brian Billick made the decision to go back to Kyle Boller in the 2003 playoffs. Boller had been on the sideline with an injury. Anthony Wright came in and gave some life to the Ravens passing game. He led the Ravens to some big victories, including the 17 point comeback against the Seattle Seahawks. I still think the Ravens would have won that playoff game if they kept Anthony Wright in the action.

It’s not like Wright was a great quarterback. He struggled mightily at times. But he also made big plays and had some big games. There was little doubt that he was capable of playing better football than Kyle Boller. Boller had missed the last seven games after a putrid start to his career. Boller had three games in which he didn’t even throw for 100 yards. He was a rookie quarterback that looked lost in the headlights. He threw 9 interceptions and got sacked 17 times in 10 games. Wright gave the offense a little bit of energy. At least he knew what he was doing.

The Ravens won five of their last seven games and made a push to the playoffs, with Wright under center. The team had momentum going into the postseason. Jamal Lewis had over 2,000 yards. They just needed to keep a good thing going. The Titans did a good job containing the Ravens rushing attack. Boller did not deliver. A promising Ravens season was down the drain. Maybe Wright would have kept the momentum going.
