3. Parting Ways With Anquan Boldin:

The Ravens made an understandable decision to trade Anquan Boldin. The problem is the 2013 Ravens had a void in their offense. With Boldin gone, defenses just double covered Torrey Smith. With no Dennis Pitta in the mix, the Ravens offense was in trouble. Meanwhile Boldin was busy having an 85 reception performance with the San Francisco 49ers. The Ravens went 8-8 and many people believe Boldin would have made a big difference.

To be fair, the Ravens had other problems in 2013. Perhaps as egregious they pegged Gino Gradkowski as their starting center. The offensive line suffered from Gradkowski’s horrible play. The Ravens were not running the football well, so that made things tough on offense. But Boldin was Flacco’s favorite target. He was his go-to-guy. The Ravens did Flacco no favors after they invested a money truck in him.

The Ravens did not see Boldin as part of their long-term plan. The problem with trading him for a sixth round pick, was the Ravens didn’t replace him. They just got rid of a good player who could have helped them get to the playoffs. As bad as the season was the Ravens had a chance in their last two games to get a playoff spot. Boldin could have been the difference, but we’ll never know.
