Baltimore Ravens make a few roster moves ahead of Broncos game

According to reports the Baltimore Ravens have waived Janarion Grant and Jermaine Eluemunor. The Ravens also reportedly promoted Tim White and Robertson Daniel from the practice squad:

The Baltimore Ravens made some news today with a few low-key moves to the 53 man roster. The main news here points to the punt returning position. Janarion Grant, who beat out Tim White for the punt returning duties going into the season has been let go. White has been moved to the active roster.

Both Grant and White mishandled a punt return in the preseason, but Grant has fumbled twice in two games. If White can prove to be a reliable punt returner, the Ravens will fill a major need. If White fails to take advantage of this chance, the Ravens will have to put a player like Willie Snead back to return punts.

The punt returning job has been a problem for the Ravens ever since Jacoby Jones left. The 2016 season saw Devin Hester look like a shell of the legend he was with the Chicago Bears. Michael Campanaro was a good punt returner, but he was often injured. While it’s exciting to see White get the promotion, calling on him is still calling on an unproven player.

Jermaine Eluemunor getting waived is pretty telling. The Ravens offensive line has been awful in the first two games of the season. Getting cut from this group is a bad look for any NFL player. Eluemunor struggled last season and wasn’t overly impressive in the preseason.

What kept him here in the first place was the idea that he could play both guard and tackle because of his size. He always had NFL traits but the game has never come naturally to him.

Eluemunor was at a major disadvantage because he started playing football just a handful of years ago. He fell in love with football from London. It was a good story, but he’s just a completely raw football player. The good news is that he is young and he has the physical tools that you look for in an offensive lineman. He’ll get more chances in the NFL.

Ryan Mink of the Ravens official website summed up why Robertson Daniel was put onto the active roster, quite perfectly.

"“Baltimore also made the move to bring up Daniel because it’s shorthanded in the secondary. Cornerback Jimmy Smith is still suspended for two more games, Maurice Canady was placed on injured reserve this week and rookie cornerback Anthony Averett (hamstring) has been ruled out for Sunday’s game.”"

The Ravens need all the help they can get in the secondary. Demaryius Thomas is a big time threat for the Broncos. Emmanuel Sanders is a player that is key to the Broncos offensive attack and Courtland Sutton is a developing rookie with jaw dropping talent. The idea of the Ravens being shorthanded at the secondary positions would not be a welcome one for the coaching staff.

The Ravens moves make sense. It seems a bit early to give up on Grant, especially because the first game was in horrible conditions. That being said, the Ravens are certainly justified for making this move.
