Trades and Jimmy Smith:

Obviously this question was answered earlier in the week, as Baltimore traded a 2020 seventh round pick for then-Green Bay Packers running back Ty Montgomery. A 2020 seventh round pick is almost entirely useless and Montgomery has shown off prowess as a receiver. His costly fumble last week against the Los Angeles Rams was the last straw for Green Bay and they were looking to get rid of him for anything.

Now in Baltimore, Montgomery will be heavily featured on passing downs or obvious passing situations. The Ravens Special Teams play hasn’t been anything special, so we could see Montgomery make his way into returner duties. For the low cost Baltimore got him at, Montgomery is good enough to kick the tires on, but he’s far from a long-term solution.

As soon as Marlon Humphrey is 100% and ready to play, there’s little-to-no reason Jimmy Smith should be starting for the Ravens. Humphrey has been playing at a Pro Bowl level in 2018, but has been slowed down by a nagging Hamstring issue. Meanwhile, Brandon Carr remains steady and consistent on the outside.

A natural reaction would be to move Smith inside to nickel, but Tavon Young has that spot locked down. Plus, Smith is far to big to be able to match-up with the smaller, quicker receivers who line-up in the slot. With all that being said, Smith is definitely someone who can come in for certain defensive packages, but he shouldn’t be relied on as a starter.

Smith is 30-years old now and has shown significant signs of regression. Ravens fans should cherish the memories he gave us throughout his time in Baltimore, but it’s hard to see him staying with the team following 2018.
