The Baltimore Ravens have a new energy going into their next season.

The goal for the Baltimore Ravens has always been to get hot at the right moment so they can give themselves momentum for a playoff run. The Ravens may have come together half a season early. On the Ravens 6-1 finish to the regular season the team came alive. The playoff loss was due to horrible game planning by Marty Mornhinweg. It doesn’t mean that the roll the Ravens were on won’t carry over to the 2019 season.

Lamar Jackson is the new leader of the offense. He’s the quarterback and his teammates have rallied behind him. Jackson has had a handful of problems so far. He’s had issues with ball security and his passing is inconsistent. One problem he hasn’t had is winning over the locker room. John Harbaugh seems excited about Jackson’s potential and the players have been very enthusiastic about him getting this chance.

The Ravens only two losses with Jackson were to the Chiefs and the Chargers. The Chiefs are hard to beat in Arrowhead and it took Pat Mahomes overtime to top Jackson’s Ravens. The Chargers had a top five offense and a top five defense. They may have exposed the work the offense had to make yet the defense showed how strong it was.

Before the Ravens run to the playoffs began to pick up steam, nobody thought the Ravens stood a chance against the Chiefs. The Ravens went in there and took it to Kansas City. If going 15 rounds with a heavyweight didn’t matter, Rocky would have never been a movie. The Ravens attacked the Chiefs with a new energy. They attacked every game with a swagger that was fresh.

This is a new team but there is also a new energy and a new feel to everything. The whole “Play like a Raven” thing is great but let’s not pretend it didn’t need a system update. Last year was the start of a new era. It was the eschewing of Joe Flacco’s Ravens and the welcoming of Jackson’s run.

It’s not all about Jackson but he was the enzyme that started all this. Jackson is on a rookie contract and the Ravens have been building around him ever since they took him with the 32nd overall pick. The Ravens have built a culture that is strong. Players like Ray Lewis and Ed Reed built the foundation of what “Play like a Raven” is supposed to mean. Players like Jackson, Mark Andrews, Marlon Humphrey and Marquise Brown get to make their own mark on the franchise. The phrase “Play like a Raven” will only grow in a new era of Ravens football.

The start of an NFL season naturally produces a lot of hope. The Ravens have an abundance of hope. Eric DeCosta clearly has a vision for this team and optimism is easy to come by at the moment. The Ravens may have found something special in that 6-1 stretch to end the regular season. There is a new and refreshing energy about this team.
