2. Is it time to take Sean Modster’s roster bid seriously?

In the first preseason game there were several big performances at the wide receiver position. One player who really turned heads was Sean Modster. The 5’11” undrafted free agent from Boise State showed that he has potential as a slot receiver in the NFL. Modster had three receptions for 17 yards against the Jaguars. The number one trait he showed was being was his short area quickness. He got open quickly and caught passes darted right at him.

The only thing we really saw him do was cut across the middle of the field. The one thing working for Modster is that he fits the Wes Welker prototype perfectly. The Ravens have never really had that kind of receiver and it is the type of receiver that would be very useful for Lamar Jackson. It’s the reason that Willie Snead’s production didn’t drop when Jackson became the starting quarterback. Quick passes over the middle are Jackson’s bread and butter as a passer at the moment. If Modster flashes the same kind of stuff against the Packers, John Harbaugh and the coaching staff have to take note.

The Ravens have a lot to figure out at the wide receiver position. Modster’s skill set fits in with the overall vision of the offense but he is an undrafted free agent with an uphill battle for a roster spot. The top five receivers for the Ravens are all but set. If Modster has another strong showing against the Packers, it could give him a boost in his effort to make the regular season roster.
