What is Wrong With Terrell Suggs?

In less than four days, Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs has gone from a league Defensive Player of the Week candidate, to the special guest host of “Athletes Who Don’t Know What to Say.”

First, it was comments about having a bounty out on Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall and how the same would be in place for Hines Ward. Now, its revelations on an Atlanta radio sports talk show about Troy Smith being the better man to start for the Ravens.

I would assume that many NFL players are more articulate and thoughtful than the media gives them credit for, but when you give the media fodder, you can’t go back and cry foul on their reporting. Specifically when the comments are incendiary towards your own team, there’s no backing out of it.

So when Suggs’ subtly criticizes a quarterback who has been successfully erratic, in favor of a guy who has been too injured to prove himself erratic, you know there’s something boiling behind the scenes? Frustration over being a franchise player? Not feeling the new philosophies on offense? Who knows, but its got tbe something for Suggs to be popping off like this.

Don’t get me wrong, I respect the guy’s talent and his intellect. But there’s got to be a better way to deal with frustration or a lack of clarity than to continually air out teammates. Add this to the Chris McAlister beef, and there’s something definitely up in the Ravens locker room.
