Lardarius Webb for the Pro Bowl

Lardarius Webb was pushing for the probowl with his play through 14 weeks.  But after watching the failure of the defense, particularly the pass defense on Sunday against the Chargers, it is clear that Webb is the best cover corner on one of the best defenses in the league.

His replacement, Jimmy Smith got beat.  He got beat often.  He got beet deep.  He got beat so badly and so often, he effectively downgraded himself from a rising star to a newly christened “rookie.”

Lardarius Webb gets December’s Peyton Manning Award, the MViP (most valuable injured player).  By not playing, he proved to everyone that he is a Pro Bowler.

The Ravens defense looked amazing with Webb but a shell of its former self without him.  I hope the Chargers make the playoffs and meet us in the Divisional Round at M & T Bank Stadium so that we can show them what it’s like to play this defense at full strength with 70,000 screaming Ravens fans.

Barring injuries to other cornerbacks, Webb will be a Pro Bowl alternate at best.  But for a division II college safety playing his first  full healthy season at cornerback — that’s saying something.

Jimmy Smith will join him in a couple of years.  But until then, I hope Webb sits the rest of the regular season.  We need him in the playoffs.
