Multiple sources are linking Eric Winston to the Ravens this evening. Scout.com was the first to report but others have followed.
Eric Winston, for those of you unfamiliar with him, is an all-world RT who was released a few days ago from the Texans. He was originally thought to be a cap casualty but it was later reveiled that he failed a physical with the team. The extent(and type) of his injury or health issue is unknown at this time(though it might be something to do with his left knee which has had injury issues since he tore his ACL in college. he has not missed a game in the past several seasons though(71 straight starts))
To be honest, these reports caught me a bit off guard. the Ravens are pretty well set at RT as Oher is still under contract for 2 more seasons and has been a solid player for them. Interest in Winston can mean any of 5 different things.
1. The Ravens arent happy with Oher.
2. The Ravens Think Oher can play LG in place of Grubbs and would then need a RT.
3. The Ravens arent happy with McKinney and want to move Oher back to the left side.
4. The Ravens arent happy with McKinney and think Winston can play LT.
5. The Ravens think Winston can play LG.
I could see the Ravens moving Oher to LG, but in my opinion he should not be moved back to LT unless the team can’t keep McKinney for whatever reason. i could also see Winston playing LG, but i think he will be to expensive to gamble on him learning a new position. im not sure he would be a good LT prospect either and Winston is not the type of player the Ravens would sign for depth.
all in all this is a pretty interesting development. It certainly is something to watch as i would expect Winston to make his decision by thursday evening. That means the Ravens might be more involved in the first wave of free agency then many originally thought or expected. The Ravens have yet to make any moves, but today has actually been one of the more interesting first day of free agencies for the Ravens in the last few seasons. lots of rumors swirling about Ben Grubbs, Ted Ginn Jr., Kassim Osgood, and now Eric Winston. Tomorrow might actually be an interesting day for the Ravens.
One other interesting note on Winston. He did play at the U. we know the Ravens front office loves Miami guys.
There were reports earlier in the day that the Washington Redskins had reached a 2 year 12 million dollar deal with Eddie Royal. Those reports were later reported to be false and now Jason LaCanfora is reporting that the Ravens have entered the Eddie Royal picture. The Ravens and Redskins are not alone and it is reported that “several” other teams are interested. Eddie Royal would not be worth the 2 years 12 million that he was rumored to have signed for earlier in the day, but a 3 year 12 million would be much more feasible.
