What To Expect in the Third Round

facebooktwitterreddit

With one round over and no new Ravens drafted, it is time to focus on round 2. The first thing to look at is who is left, my highest rated players remaining are
17. Courtney Upshaw
19. Cordy Glenn
24. Stephen Hill
26. Jonathan Martin
28. Reuben Randal
29. Amini Silatolu
and for the sake of argument even though he is far from one of my top remaining players.
50. Peter Konz
It is a pretty safe bet that the Ravens will take at least one of those players.

The next thing to check on is who the Colts and Rams are thinking of taking. Reportedly the Rams are not going to trade the pick and they will take a WR at 33. The popular opinion is becoming Brian Quick. Quick would be a bit of a surprise but I can understand the pick. The good news for Ravens fans is that they wouldn’t be able to use Courtney Upshaw and they apparently don’t want Stephen Hill.
The Colts are up next and here is where things get tricky. The Colts could go after Coby Fleener to help out Andrew Luck with his NFL transition or they could draft Upshaw to help Chuck Pagano transition to his 3-4 defensive scheme. I wouldn’t be surprised by either and I also wouldn’t rule out Cordy Glenn.
With any luck the Ravens will get at least one of Stephen Hill or Courtney Upshaw. I would say Hill is a near lock to be available and Upshaw is a 50/50 shot. I do not think the Ravens are high on Cordy Glenn. If they were they wouldn’t have traded back because if you look at the 5 teams in between the Ravens old position and their new position(subbing in the Broncos for the Bucs) every single team needed offensive line help. If the Ravens wanted Glenn they would have taken him.
I wouldn’t rule out Jonathan Martin or Alshon Jeffery here either. I have had a hunch that the Ravens brass was high on both of them for a while now.
The rest of the round is a bit more convoluted. There will likely be a run on WRs, but I’m not sure where it will happen. There will be a run on offensive lineman, but again I’m not sure where (I would guess 10-20). I suspect the Ravens might be using the fourth rounder they received from the Vikings yesterday to move up from their 28th pick in the second round. If they were to pass on Upshaw and a player like Hill or Jeffery started to slide to around 10-12 I would think the Ravens would be tempted to strike.

My prediction. I think the Ravens come away with either Steven Hill and Keleche Osemele or Courtney Upshaw and Alshon Jeffery.
