Baltimore Ravens State of the Corps: Quarterback

1 of 2

The Baltimore Ravens quarterback situation may seem like a pointless thing to write about with Joe Flacco locked in for years to come, but the departure of backup Tyrod Taylor has left a bit of a void behind the durable starter.

For the last 4 years, Tyrod Taylor has solidified the #2 spot, and though he didn’t necessarily do anything to lose it, Taylor also didn’t do anything to prove he was worth a premium contract either. During his tenure with the Ravens, Taylor appeared in only 14 games, going 19/35 for 199 yards with no touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Taylor has now signed with the Buffalo Bills and is headed into a three way competition with E.J. Manuel and Matt Cassel.

Taylor’s departure leaves the Ravens with Keith Wenning, a 6th round pick from last year’s draft. Wenning showed enough promise during the preseason, going 10/17 for 140 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions, to earn a spot on the practice squad.

The Ravens also have Bryn Renner, an undrafted rookie who signed back in January. He didn’t throw a single pass in the preseason for the Broncos and was cut in late August. Mike Mayock referred to Renner as “polished” and stated that he wouldn’t have been surprised if he was a first round pick going into his senior season. A shoulder injury (non-throwing arm) unfortunately cut his season short after 7 games.

Wenning and Renner’s inexperience makes it very hard for the Ravens to just hand one of them the clipboard, so they could look to add a veteran QB to provide competition during camp. As far as free agents go, there are a couple of guys who could provide ample competition for them: Jordan Palmer and Matt Moore.
