The Baltimore Ravens season is just about finished and that is a merciful fact. The Ravens season was wasted in a mix of mediocrity and a rash of injuries but some good may come out of it. The Ravens may have found a few puzzle pieces that will save them time in their offseason rebuild.

For starters the Ravens learned that the most competent backup to Joe Flacco is Ryan Mallet. Keeping Ryan Mallet gets a little tricky considering they already have Matt Schaub locked up in the understudy role. Since Flacco went down however it became painfully apparent that Mallet is the only backup the Ravens should want in that role. This is something the Ravens should make happen.

Mallet has always been out of this world talented. He has a rocket arm and he throws a really pretty pass. His problems have come on the mental aspects of the game and the business. Maturity and on field decision making are what got Mallet away from the Houston Texans. He potentially has another chance in Baltimore backing up a Super Bowl MVP.
At the wide receiver position Chris Matthews is a stand out. Matthews is somebody you may remember from the Super Bowl, when he made amazing catches in a losing effort to the Patriots. Matthews isn’t a number one receiver but he is a big bodied weapon. The Ravens obviously would still need to upgrade their receiving corps but if they use Matthews correctly they have a nice target.
Javorious “Buck” Allen is a really flashy rookie running back from USC. The former Trojan has some really good moves and seems to be an instinctive rusher. Allen provides a skillset very similar to Ray Rice and he can be used in the passing game as well. I don’t know that he supplants Forsett as the starter but he certainly will get his touches.
It may not seem like much but the Ravens have found three players that could make a major contribution to the team next year. This year we learned the importance of a backup quarterback, a roster spot that was always an after thought in the Flacco era. Matthews is a young and raw receiver who needs to get a chance to shine. Allen is sometimes dazzling on the field and has a ton of potential.
