The Baltimore Ravens have made their first round of cuts of the 2017 offseason.

With many NFL teams clearing shop and loading off players, the Baltimore Ravens have been fairly quiet. Today they finally got in on the action, making their first round of cuts. According to Jeff Zrebiec, the Ravens have cut cornerback Shareece Wright and safety Kendrick Lewis. It is exactly one year since Wright signed a three year extension with the team.

The team also made it official, sending out this tweet.

Per Zrebiec, the move will free up about $5 million in cap space for the Ravens. It may seem like a small amount, but it is significant going forward. This move does not come as a surprise because the two have been linked as cap casualties.

Wright joined the Ravens in 2015 after he was released by the San Francisco 49ers. Wright started six games, playing sparingly for the defense. Before last season Wright signed a three year contract extension to stay in Baltimore. He started in 9 games, covering for the injured Jimmy Smith. It became clear that he was not able to match up against the top receivers of the NFL.

Kendrick Lewis signed a 3 year deal with the Ravens in 2015. His first season was very productive and it looked like it was going to be a perfect pairing for the two. His playing time took a hit when the Ravens moved Lardarius Webb to free safety and added Eric Weddle in free agency. Lewis suffered a thigh injury in October and was placed on injured reserve. Going forward, there are probably going to be more cuts made. Elvis Dumervil, Kyle Arrington, Dennis Pitta, Jeremy Zuttah, and Mike Wallace could also be cap casualties to come.
