The former 1st round pick has been arrested for the second time this offseason

Matt Elam cannot seem to stay out of trouble. The former 2013 first round pick of the Baltimore Ravens has been once again this offseason.

According to a report from ESPN, Elam was arrested this morning on grand theft and battery charges. This is the second time that he has been arrested this offseason. He was charged with drug possession back in February.

Per Raven’s beat reporter Jeff Zrebiec, the arrest was made following a dispute with Elam’s girlfriend over a cell phone. It is sad to see a player like him burn out so quickly from the league.

Done and gone

The Ravens made it clear in February that they were moving on from Elam and did not pick up his 5th year option this offseason. They also added more depth to the secondary in free agency by signing Tony Jefferson and Brandon Carr. Safety Lardarius Webb was also brought back. Now there’s virtually no chance that Elam will ever play another down in the NFL again.

This pick will definitely not go on Ozzie Newsome’s resume. There was talk after the first arrest if Elam was the worst draft pick in franchise history and I think he’s finally solidified that role. He was meant to be the successor to Ed Reed, but it never worked out like that. His rookie season was very promising, but it seemed to go down hill from there. He struggled with injuries that forced him to miss the part of the 2014 season and all of 2015. The Ravens brought him back for nine games last season and the struggles continued.

Hopefully he can get his life back together, but for now his career in the NFL will be tainted with disappointment.
