With all of the general manager firings this offseason, the Baltimore Ravens are lucky to have consistency at the position

The offseason is usually a busy time for players and coaches, but there’s been a lot of moves in NFL front offices. Most of them haven’t been positive.

General managers have been subject to the hot seat this offseason and we’ve seen a number let go. Since free agency started back in March, the Chiefs, Colts, Redskins and Bills have all fired their general managers. Some moves were expected while others were surprising.

WIth all of these moves the Ravens can count their blessings. They are lucky to have arguably the best general manager in the league with Ozzie Newsome, along with a fantastic front office.

Pillar Of Consistency

The Ravens may have problems at different positions on the field, but they never have to worry about general manager. That’s thanks to Ozzie Newsome.

Since coming into the position in 2002, Newsome is currently the 5th longest tenured general manager in the league. He’s behind the likes of Jerry Jones, Kevin Colbert and Bill Belichick. A similarity with all of these general managers? Their teams have had success and that’s certainly been the case with Ozzie.

Along with helping draft hall-of-famers Ray Lewis, Ed Reed and Jonathan Ogden, one of Ozzie’s best moves came when he hired head coach John Harbaugh. The Ravens took a chance on the former special-teams coach with no head coaching experience. It was a blessing in disguise after current Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett turned down the offer.

The Ravens hired Harbaugh, drafted Joe Flacco and as we know, the rest is history. Say what you want about the recent struggles, but their success has outweighed that. Since 2008 they made the playoffs six times and won a Super Bowl.

None of this would have happened if it weren’t in part for Ozzie Newsome.

As long-time Ravens columnist John Eisenberg wrote, Ozzie has the chance to do something special. The hall-of-fame player could very well also be inducted as a hall-of-fame general manager.

How many teams can say that?

“In Ozzie We Trust”

Ever since Ozzie became the GM there’s been a phrase that’s often used: “In Ozzie We Trust”. If you are a Ravens fan, you know what this means. No matter what decisions the team makes and through it all, our trust is in Ozzie Newsome. In the end he and the front office no what is best for this team. And time and time again he has proven just that.

Just take this offseason for example. The wide receiver position was paper thin during the start of free agency. Steve Smith Sr. retired and Kamar Aiken signed a deal with the Colts. Fans were calling for the Ravens to sign a free agent early or draft a rookie. The Ravens did just the opposite and people were outraged. They berated Ozzie and the Ravens for not making a move. I’ll be honest I was worried when they didn’t decide to make a move.

But lone behold, Ozzie worked his magic. With just a little bit of luck, the Chiefs cut veteran Jeremy Maclin and the Ravens scooped him up. This is just one example of the many times that Ozzie has done for this for the Ravens. Sure there has been mistakes, but they’ve been canceled out with even better moves.

Time and time again fans will doubt, but Ozzie will continue to keep proving them wrong.
