What Effect Will Polamalu and Peterson’s New Contracts Have on the Ravens?

Both Troy Polamalu and Adrian Peterson made headlines today as they signed new contracts. Minnesota Vikings running back , Adrian Peterson, cashed in big time with a contract that is worth up to $100 million over eight years with $36 million guarenteed while Pittsburgh Steelers safety, Troy Polamalu, inked a four year deal worth about $9 million a season. Both of these big contract signings will have an impact on the Baltimore Ravens in various ways.

More after the jump…

To get the obvious out of the way, having Troy P on the Steelers for the next few years is not a good thing for the Ravens. Polamalu is a tremendous player and will only make the Ravens job harder for years to come. But the one underlying impact that you may not of thought of is what this means for Ed Reed. Reed’s current contract runs through the 2012 season and if he wishes to play longer, he can certainly use Polamalu’s contract as a blueprint. Recently, Reed has talked of retiring soon because of his lingering injuries but he very well could continue playing for a couple of more years.

The same goes for Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson’s contract. Peterson is considered the leagues best running back and with a $100 million dollar contract, he’s getting payed like one. Chris Johnson of the Tennessee Titans recently held out for quite some time as he waited for his big pay day. Ray Rice will definitely want a contract extension soon and his contract will be up there in terms of money. If Ray Rice shows why he’s considered one of the best over the next couple of seasons, he can argue for a contract close to Peterson’s or Johnson’s. It may seem far away but the time will come before you know it.

Haloti Ngata is also wait for his new contract after he was hit with the franchise tag this off-season. Though it won’t happen today, expect his deal to come in the near future.
