The Ravens have made the first of several waives of cuts.
per Baltimoreravens.com
"Baltimore terminated the contract of vested veteran tight end Visanthe Shiancoe. The Ravens waived wide receiver Tommy Streeter, running back Damien Berry, wide receiver Rashad Carter, guard/tackle Jack Cornell, inside linebacker Bryan Hall, guard/tackle Ramon Harewood, defensive back Moe Lee, tackle David Mims, defensive end Will Pericak, wide receiver Gerrard Sheppard and outside linebacker Meshak Williams."
Four names stick out on that list, Shiancoe, Harewood, Streeter and Bryan Hall.
FIrst lets talk about Hall. I was pulling for this guy. He lost over 50 lbs in the offseason to make a difficult switch from defensive tackle to inside linebacker. It sucks that he didnt make it past the first wave of cuts, esspecially considering he has shown some potential in the preseason. John Harbaugh said the decision to release him now instead of giving him longer to make the switch, was to give Bryan a better chance to get on another roster. That makes some sense and is pretty considerate, but still, i liked Hall. any player willing to put in that much work just to make the roster, he sounds like a Raven to me.
Streeter is the most disappointing name on the list. not so much because he was a surprising cut or anything, but because Ravens fans as a whole had extremely high hopes for him. He could end up being a practice squad player if he doesnt get picked up by anyone.
Shiancoe just got outplayed. Everybody knows that he isnt the pass catcher Dallas Clark is, and with Dickson getting healthy ahead of schedule, there just wasnt room for him, especially with Matt Furstenburg playing well.
Harewood was a surprise to me. I thought he played pretty darn well at RG last year, but It seems like the Ravens ridiculous depth on the interior line(i mean seriously, does any NFL team have more guard depth?) pushed him off the roster. Harewood has always had issues staying healthy enough to show how talented he is. It looks like that finally caught up with him.
The only other name of any note is Damien Berry. but with the Ravens likely to carry 2 FBs and having 2 RB studs in addition to elite special teamer Anthony Allen, there was never really a roster spot for him after the moment Leech re-signed. If Berry doesnt end up back on the Ravens practice squad, he will find a home somewhere in the league.
