The Ravens gave it everything they had, at least offensively, and came up just a tiny bit short.  Their divisional round game against the Patriots Saturday night was truly an instant classic, though the results are still the same – a trip home for the remainder of the postseason.
It was a notable performance for a Gary Kubiak led offense that seemed to get stronger once the postseason began, which unsurprisingly came as he decided to stop playing so conservatively.  Joe Flacco is a guy who butters his bread on the deep pass, and this year’s ground game was too good to not use a little play action here and there.
Making this performance even more notable is the fact that it came against a strong Patriots defense, one that ranked 15th in total defense through the regular season and allowed just 23 passing touchdowns through 16 games. Â On Saturday night, they gave up 292 yards and 4 touchdowns to one Joe Flacco.
While many thought that the offense would be what doomed the Ravens, it was instead their much vaunted defense that did them in. Â A rag tag secondary was scorched to the tune of 408 yards through the air, though the front seven once again shut down the run game.
