When the Baltimore Ravens watched last year’s starter at tight end, Owen Daniels, walk in free agency, everyone knew they were going to attack the position via the draft.
And they did so in a big way, taking not only the top TE in the draft, Maxx Williams in the second round, but they spent a fifth rounder on Nick Boyle as well.
Everyone forgot about 2014 third round pick Crockett Gillmore, or just assumed that he was going to play the blocking complement to the pass catching Williams. But Williams has so far struggled to pick up the offense while Gillmore has had a very strong training camp.
So it appears that the Ravens won’t miss Owen Daniels too much after all. But will they miss former punt/kick returner Jacoby Jones? With the injury prone Michael Campanaro and Asa Jackson competing for the job, they certainly might.
The other interesting news tidbit of the day comes from former Ravens running back Ray Rice, who had a surprisingly poor season in 2013. NBC analyst Rodney Harrison spoke with Rice about that season, and Rice told him that he had to take regular injections for a tear in his hip flexor.
It’s an interesting development, and it makes you wonder if the injury is really to blame for Rice’s awful 3.1 yard per carry average in his last full NFL season. Of course, he was playing behind a terrible offense line as well.
