Baltimore Ravens: Ready For Next Defensive Coordinator?

The Baltimore Ravens currently have a defensive coordinator in Dean Pees. The Ravens defense has not been all that amazing in the Pees tenure. The Ravens may decide to go in another direction; we also can’t rule out that the 66 year old coach could retire. Who could replace Pees if necessary?

For me there are only two names on this list. The first option is Chuck Pagano who is all but out as the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts. Pagano was the defensive coordinator in 2011. He seemed to pull all the right strings and he was the aggressive coach the Ravens needed.
The other option on the list has been a coach on the Ravens staff for the last 11 years. Clarence Brooks, the defensive line coach knows exactly what all the great Ravens defenses were made of. If anyone could restore the tenacity of a once feared defense it is Brooks.
Rex Ryan is going to be with the Bills for at least one more season so the Ravens can cross him off their coordinator wish list. That being said the Ravens don’t need to march in a new direction they need to restore their old path to greatness. For over a decade the Ravens defense was as respected as any unit in football. Pagano and Brooks know what those defenses were all about and they can bring that vision into the new job.
The reason Pagano is the best option (if he is indeed fired by the Colts) is that he has had the job before. We know what Pagano believes in defensively and with head coaching experience his perspective would be so valuable for John Harbaugh to have on his staff.
Brooks probably should have gotten the job upon Pagano’s departure to Indianapolis. Brooks would probably be the most pass rush oriented of potential candidates. It would be nice to see Brooks get rewarded for all his time with the Ravens, if he wants the job.
