The Baltimore Ravens are in need of a superstar wide receiver and Josh Doctson could be just what the doctor ordered. Josh Doctson is a big bodied wide receiver who was very prolific at TCU. Doctson has a skill set that reminds me of a young Anquan Boldin. This makes him a perfect candidate for the Ravens in the NFL Draft, we know what Joe Flacco can do with this kind of weapon.

Doctson put up big time numbers as a member of the Horned Frogs. The 6’3″ receiver had 79 receptions for 1,327 yards and 14 touchdowns in the 2015 season. In four seasons in his collegiate career he scored 34 touchdowns and racked up just over 3,000 yards. He is a great red zone threat and can handle being the go guy in an offense. In a shootout against Texas Tech, Doctson caught 18 passes for 267 yards and three touchdowns. Doctson quickly became one of my favorite players in college football for a reason, he is tough and reliable.

Strengths:

More from Ravens Draft

  • Good 6’3″ frame and long arms
  • Good route runner, high football IQ
  • Can Make Contested Catch
  • Great red zone target, always open over his head with great vertical ability
  • Consistent hands
  • Toughness

Concerns:

  • Doesn’t have top-tier speed
  • Does he have all around game or is he a possession receiver?

Draft Stock:

I have a first round grade on Doctson, who is my second rated receiver in this draft class. The Ravens may be able to wait on Doctson who may fall to them because of speed concerns. His combine results will greatly boost or diminish his draft stock. If the Ravens could get him in the second round they could prioritize the secondary with the sixth overall pick. He could go anywhere from the top 10 to early in the second round depending on what receiver needy teams value.

Why He Is Perfect For Ravens:

If Breshad Perriman is what the Ravens hoped him to be the team doesn’t need a speed demon receiver. If the Ravens could pair a healthy Perriman with a player like Doctson the Ravens would have a combination much like they had with Boldin and Torrey Smith for years to come. It is also worth noting that the Ravens don’t have a long-term answer at the receiver position.

Steve Smith Sr. is a nice band-aide but his retirement after the season will uncover a wound in the roster. Perriman’s future is a mystery at the moment. Doctson and Flacco would be an awesome combination.
