Joe Flacco 3 Year Extension Is A Win For Everyone
According to reports the Baltimore Ravens have given Joe Flacco three year contract extension. This ensures the services of the franchise quarterback until 2021. The contract extension lowers Flacco’s $28.5 million cap hit. This is a win for the Ravens and it is a win for Flacco, who now sees even more guaranteed money.
This is huge news. It means the Ravens can start the offseason frenzy with their first task off their checklist. The Ravens will probably make more moves to free up some cap space. For now this is a start. If you think of the Ravens cap space in football terms, the Ravens were backed up on their own two yard line. The Flacco deal has allowed the team to move the chains and get some financial breathing room.
Flacco is worth the long term commitment. He is a Super Bowl MVP. Whether or not you see Flacco as an elite quarterback, you have to admit the Ravens have something a lot of teams don’t have. The Ravens have a quarterback that steps up in the big moments, and wins in the NFL playoffs. Flacco has won more road playoff games than any quarterback in NFL history, and he has proven to be as clutch as it gets with the game on the line.
The Ravens have been to the playoffs six times in eight seasons with Flacco as their starting quarterback, and that isn’t a coincidence. After suffering the quarterback carrousel of Banks, Dilfer, Redman, Boller, Wright, Boller again, McNair, Boller yet again and Troy Smith, the Ravens’ willingness to commit long term to their franchise quarterback shouldn’t be surprising. That’s the main point when it comes to Flacco, no matter where he ranks he is a true franchise quarterback.
The Ravens have one of the top free agents in Kelechi Osemele. Without the contract extension of “Joe Cool” the Ravens would not have a shot at keeping Osemele. Now the Ravens have at least a shot if they can continue to free cap space.
