Roddy White was just released by the Atlanta Falcons. White was one of the greatest players in Falcons history; in 11 seasons he racked up 10,863 receiving yards. Should the Ravens be interested in the veteran receiver?

Roddy White is well past his prime. There was a time where he was good for over 80 receptions a season, and was an absolute force to be reckoned with. In 2010 and 2011, he had back to back seasons with 100 receptions. Last season he had just 43 receptions and 1 touchdown.

Signing White would be a very Ravens like move. The team has never been afraid to sign veteran wide receivers. The Ravens three best receivers were Anquan Boldin, Derrick Mason and Steve Smith Sr., who were all seasoned pros by the time they arrived in Baltimore. White would be a big name signing for a very affordable price.

In 2014 White was still a prolific receiver. He had 80 receptions for 921 yards and 7 touchdowns. The question is whether or not White can still be that kind of playmaker? If he can it is worth the Ravens while. If he can’t the Ravens would essentially be paying for the name.

Here is a pro and cons chart that may help with this issue:

Pros:

  • White is a big bodied wide receiver.
  • He has a wealth of experience.
  • He is a perfect route runner and has great hands
  • Would theoretically be a great compliment to Steve Smith St.
  • Low risk

Cons:

  • Past his prime, very old for NFL standards
  • Not as dynamic as he once was
  • Short-term solution at Wide Receiver

At the end of the day, the Ravens probably have better options. That being said, White would be an affordable option who still could bring value to the Ravens. While signing a player who has been a star in the league for 11 seasons wouldn’t be one of the under the radar moves the team is known for, it would make sense.
