When it becomes official later today, Kelechi Osemele will be the highest paid guard in the National Football League. He will no longer be a member of the Baltimore Ravens, as the Oakland Raiders have made the first big splash in NFL Free Agency. There is no doubt that the Ravens are losing one of the best offensive linemen in football. There is more to this story than meets the eye however.

When something like this happens it is all too easy to overreact. Overreacting is the calling card of NFL Free Agency. Every year fans go through a cycle of panicking when they lose a player and boasting when their team makes a move. Every year the media picks a winner of Free Agency and that team is expected to do big things the next season. Panic may be the most common side effect of the open market frenzy but panicking is not on Ozzie Newsome’s or Eric DeCosta’s job description.

There is work to be done. The Ravens will look to build their 2016 roster as well as they can through Free Agency and the NFL Draft. This move is a big deal. Losing Osemele doesn’t help the Ravens. Yet it should be noted that the sun came up this morning and that there are 3 big things to think about here.
