#3 Overall: The San Diego Chargers select:

player. 13.
With Eric Weddle’s departure, the San Diego secondary is looking thin at safety. They have two outstanding cornerbacks in Jason Verrett and Brandon Flowers, not to mention Casey Hayward, who they signed away from the Packers. However, they are still have a huge hole at the free safety position, which Jalen Ramsey is perfectly suited for at the next level.

Ramsey has all the intangibles you want in a star defensive player; leadership, playmaking abilities, confidence, and swagger. He can play any secondary position at a high level, but watching him play free safety during his freshman year, in which Florida State won the National Championship, leads me to believe he could excel as a safety who covers the deep middle and can erase the deep ball from opposing offenses. He’s not only a free safety however, he can come down in the box or even blitz off the edge, which he was very effective at during his time with Florida State.

Ramsey reminds me of Patrick Peterson coming out. Two big and long cornerbacks who could erase a receiver in press coverage or play some zone and read the QB’s eyes. Peterson is a little faster than Ramsey, but Ramsey is more physical at the point of attack. Either way, Ramsey will be a star at the next level, making plays for the Chargers in whatever role they decide for him.
. CB/FS. FSU. Jalen Ramsey. 3
