The 2001 Defense

The Ravens had pretty much the same cast of characters on their defense as they tried to defend their first Super Bowl crown. The Ravens offense was even worse than it was in the 2000 season. Jamal Lewis (the only thing the Ravens had going for them offensively) was out for the entire season. Elvis Grbac threw 18 interceptions in an awful season. Yet the Ravens went to the playoffs and won a game in the wild card round.

The Ravens lost to the Steelers in the divisional round of the playoffs. The Ravens defense finished second in total defense that season. But here is an interesting stat. The Ravens defense was one of three top 10 defenses who had over 1,000 plays from scrimmage. The Ravens offense put them in miserable situations and they still managed to be incredible.

There would be no Super Bowl magic for the Ravens defense in 2001. There would however be complete respect for what they accomplished. Not every season can be a magical and history making Super Bowl run. The Ravens fell short but it was not because of the defense.
