Duds: Special Teams

John Harbaugh, a former special teams coach, could not be happy after witnessing an opposing returner take back not one, but two kicks for big yardage.

Gunners wiffed on easy tackles and the coverage down the field was pretty horrendous, at least for the Ravens’ standards. Darren Waller was the only consistent gunner, and was one of the best special teamers in the league last season.

The team still does not have a reliable punt returner. Michael Campanaro is the most experienced and talented of the bunch, but he can’t stay healthy. Kaelin Clay had a disastrous night, dropping a pass on offense and fumbling a punt deep in Ravens’ territory. Keenan Reynolds didn’t have much going on, as he looked hesitant.

Different players tried out for the role of kick returner, and the team prefers for that player to be a running back or wide receiver. Terrance West or Kenneth Dixon are both talented runners in space and would be decent choices. Rookie Chris Moore would be an interesting option, he’s got great speed and he is shifty, but he is currently out with a lower leg injury.

Backup kicker Wil Lutz missed a 53 yard field goal, which is detrimental to his chances of catching on with another team.

Overall not a good day by Jerry Rosburg’s special teams unit.
