The Baltimore Ravens Defense Got the Job Done Against The Detroit Lions:

The most exciting aspect of the Baltimore Ravens 30-9 victory was the defensive dominance. The Ravens defense kept the Lions out of the end zone. Other than a few missed tackles, the defensive unit looked on top of their game. On the same night Joe Flacco made his debut, the Ravens defense got their leader back too.

It was incredible to see Terrell Suggs back on the field. The run defense improved. Suggs quickly put on a clinic on setting the edge. Great players like Suggs make an impact beyond what their stats say.  When Elvis Dumervil returns, imagine how good this defense could be.

Anthony Levine and Matt Judon were the stars of the night. Levine had an interception and a sack. Judon forced a fumble, had three tackles and a sack. These are two players that you may not have expected big things from, that are doing big things.

The Ravens gave up some yards, but they were stingy yards. Matthew Stafford finished 14-23 for 95 yards and an interception. Other than a 34 yard run by Theo Riddick, the Ravens bottled up the Lions ground game.

The secondary made a drastic improvement. The stats would have been even more impressive if a questionable pass interference call didn’t extend the Lions first drive. The coverage was in the Lions grill. It was tight. It was what the Ravens have to expect.

Over the course of the preseason, the Ravens have consistently played strong in the red zone. When the Colts drove down the field they had to settle for three. When Cam Newton and the Panthers sliced their way through the defense they too ended up with a field goal. The only scores the Ravens gave up tonight were field goals. This is a recipe for success.

The Ravens defense showed signs of life. It seems that the defense is on the right track as we head to week one. When the defense can improve like this so quickly, it makes you think we haven’t seen anything yet.  If the defense can build off this, the Ravens opponents are in trouble.
